Wellness, Snake oil and Turkey Tail

Five minutes on social media, and you will encounter a wellness guru earnestly explaining that your exhaustion, anxiety and sense of malaise can all be traced to one missing ingredient. Fortunately, they have found it! It is protein, collagen or a secret herb that has been used for thousands of years. The modern wellness industry thrives on confidence rather than competence. Complex problems including chronic pain, fatigue, poor sleep, anxiety, metabolic disease, and chronic inflammation are reduced into a single cause with a single antidote.

A herb used for centuries in one medical system becomes a universal panacea in another, with little discussion of who should not take it, how it interacts with medications, or what evidence actually supports its use.

While the wellness industry overpromises, the UK government often responds by overcorrecting. Regulation tends to default to restriction rather than education. Instead of cracking down on misleading claims or improving public understanding, authorities reach for bans. So, we end up in a strange place. On one side, influencers confidently prescribing herbs to millions with little accountability, herbs are sold online without any quality measures or guarantee that the packet contains what it claims to be! On the other, a government that responds by banning herbal medicine rather than tackling the misinformation.

Turkey tail mushroom is one recent example,  a fungus long used in Asian medicine and  researched for its immune-modulating properties has had a recent surge of interest on social media. It has faced restrictions under novel food regulations and is no longer available for sale over the counter. The result is confusion rather than safety. Consumers are left wondering whether herbs are either useless nonsense or dangerous enough to be removed from shelves, neither is true.

Medicinal plants are a valuable resource and traditional herb usage can offer valuable insight into how to regain health. Using these without adequate knowledge can sometimes cause harm, safe use is essential! Luckily the baby hasn’t quite been thrown out with the bathwater and UK government has respected the rights of medical Herbalist’s to prescribe this powerful medicine remains (for now).

Qualified Medical herbalists have practice rooted in systems of diagnosis, preparation, dosage and contraindications with detailed knowledge of hundreds of botanical medicines and how they can be utilised to support health. This knowledge cannot be condensed into a 3 minute Instagram reel.

Real wellness comes from understanding and being responsible for our health, and seeking knowledge from qualified health professionals rather than TikTok or you tube.
